| Evaluation Parameter | Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) | Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) |
|---|---|---|
| Capability Baseline | Human parity across cognitive & economic work | Orders of magnitude beyond human biological capability |
| Self-Improvement | Participates in software engineering with humans | Autonomous, recursive algorithmic self-redesign |
| Domain Mastery | Broad cross-domain generalization | Absolute mastery across physics, mathematics, biology |
| Control & Alignment | Inspectable through standard oversight & RLHF | Requires formal mathematical alignment guarantees |
Why the distinction matters
Conflating AGI with ASI leads to strategic errors in policy and safety planning. AGI is fundamentally an economic and labor automation milestone; ASI is an existential and civilizational event horizon.
An AGI system operating at the level of a human software engineer can automate programming tasks but is constrained by standard trial-and-error scientific verification. An ASI would possess the capability to simulate, verify, and invent entirely new physical paradigms, fundamentally re-architecting technology itself.
