10 AI Software Products Worth Evaluating in 2026
Ten widely used AI products across assistants, coding, research, video, voice and automation, with what each is for, one limit to watch, and how to run a fair trial before you commit.
By Technology Desk11 min read
Most 'best AI software' lists are rankings in costume. They name a winner without a test behind it, and they change nothing about how you should buy. This one does something narrower. It names ten products that cover the main jobs people use AI for, says what each vendor says the product is for, and points to one limit worth checking before you rely on it.
What are the ten products at a glance?
| Product | Main job | Limit to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | General assistant for documents and tasks | Fluent output can still contain errors; check facts and figures |
| Cursor | AI coding agent | Agent changes still need human review and tests |
| GitHub Copilot | AI help inside editors and on GitHub | Suggestions can be wrong or insecure; review them like any other code |
| Perplexity | AI-powered web search with references | A cited answer can still misread its source |
| Consensus | Search across peer-reviewed literature | AI summaries of studies can omit caveats |
| Runway | Video, image and audio generation and editing | Generated media needs a human check for quality and rights |
| ElevenLabs | Voice, speech and audio generation | Voice use raises consent and disclosure questions |
| Zapier | Workflow automation across apps | An automation that acts on its own can make mistakes at scale |
| Descript | Video and audio editing by editing text | Transcript-driven edits depend on transcript accuracy |
| Notion | Team workspace with built-in AI | AI answers are only as good as the pages it can read |
Ten products by job. Purposes are paraphrased from each vendor's own page; limits are our editorial judgement.
Which products work as general assistants?
1. Claude
What it is for: Anthropic's page presents Claude as an AI collaborator for real work, a tool where you hand over a task, not just a question, and it can produce editable files such as documents, spreadsheets and slides. The page aims it at people in roles such as marketing, finance, legal and product.
Limit to watch: a polished document is not a verified one. Check every figure, name and citation before it leaves your desk. See our head-to-head ChatGPT vs Claude comparison for more on how we handle comparisons.
2. Notion
What it is for: Notion presents its AI as a built-in team for people who already work in Notion, with an agent, enterprise search and AI meeting notes meant to help teams move work forward across their pages, databases and connected apps.
Limit to watch: answers draw on what the tool can read. If your pages are out of date or inconsistent, expect out-of-date answers. Check what the AI can access, and who else can see its output, before you connect sensitive workspaces.
Which products help with coding?
3. Cursor
What it is for: Cursor describes itself as an AI coding agent. Developers can hand off tasks to agents that run in places such as the terminal, Slack and GitHub, so they can focus on decisions while the agents build and test features.
Limit to watch: an agent that changes many files at once makes review harder, not easier. Keep changes small, run your tests, and read the diff. Our guide on what an AI coding agent is explains what to check before giving one access to a repository.
4. GitHub Copilot
What it is for: GitHub describes Copilot as an AI accelerator for every workflow, from the editor to the enterprise. It is meant to help developers write code and run AI agents across their editors, the command line and GitHub itself.
Limit to watch: suggestions can be wrong, out of date or insecure, and they look just as confident either way. Treat them like code from a new colleague. If you are comparing it with Cursor, our guide to choosing a coding assistant shows how to test fairly on your own code, and our AI coding tools page lists more options.
Which products help with research?
5. Perplexity
What it is for: Perplexity's help centre describes an AI-powered search engine that answers questions conversationally, draws on web search, and provides references you can check. It aims to deliver direct answers that combine information from several sites.
Limit to watch: a link next to an answer does not prove the answer matches the page. Open the source for any claim you plan to repeat.
6. Consensus
What it is for: Consensus calls itself an AI academic search engine for peer-reviewed literature, a place to search, organise and analyse scientific papers. It includes a 'Consensus Meter' that shows scientific agreement on yes/no questions.
Limit to watch: a summary line is not a study. A meter can make a contested question look settled, so open the underlying papers and read their methods. Our AI research tools page compares this category in more detail.
Which products help with video, audio and voice?
7. Runway
What it is for: Runway's site describes models that aim to understand, simulate and act in the world, and three offerings: Runway Creative, a cloud-based suite for generating and editing video, images and audio; Runway Dev, an API for developers; and Runway Robotics, a toolkit for evaluating and running robot policies in simulation.
Limit to watch: generated footage needs a human check for quality, accuracy and rights before publication. See our AI video generators page for the wider category.
8. Descript
What it is for: Descript describes an AI video and audio editor that works like a text document, where editing your words edits your video. It is aimed at teams in marketing, sales and support, and at podcasters who record, edit and share.
Limit to watch: if editing follows the transcript, errors in the transcript become errors in the edit. Listen to the audio around every cut.
9. ElevenLabs
What it is for: ElevenLabs presents an audio platform with tools for text-to-speech, voice cloning, music and sound effects, aimed at creators making audiobooks and podcasts, and at developers and enterprises building conversational agents.
Limit to watch: synthetic and cloned voices raise questions about consent and disclosure. Only clone a voice with the speaker's permission, and tell listeners when audio is synthetic.
Which product helps with automation?
10. Zapier
What it is for: Zapier describes an automation platform for building and governing AI workflows, agents and apps across a large catalogue of connected apps. The page stresses oversight, with IT setting guardrails such as action restrictions, managed connections and logging.
Limit to watch: an automation that acts without a person in the loop can repeat a mistake many times before anyone notices. Start with read-only or low-stakes steps, add a human approval step for anything that sends, pays or deletes, and read the logs. Our AI tools for business page covers more of this category.
How do I trial two products fairly?
A simple, fair trial
- Write the job downOne sentence, such as 'summarise a 20-page contract and list the open questions'. A clear job lets you judge the result.
- Use a real example you can checkPick a task where you already know a good answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
- Give both products the same inputSame files, same instructions, same day. Change one thing at a time.
- Count the fixing timeThe time you spend correcting output is part of the cost. A tool that is fast but needs heavy editing may not save time.
- Check what happens to your dataRead the vendor's data-handling and account-control pages before you upload anything sensitive. Our guide on AI data retention questions lists what to ask.
- Repeat onceRun a second, different task. One good result can be luck.
How should I treat what vendors say?
Everything in the 'what it is for' lines comes from the vendors themselves. A vendor's page tells you what it intends the product to do. It does not tell you how often it succeeds. We sort claims into classes in vendor claims vs. verified findings, and the same caution applies here: a description is a claim, a score from the vendor is a vendor claim, and only an independent, dated test is evidence. For where to start with the whole question, see how to choose an AI tool, or browse our AI tools shortlist.
If you want help writing the instructions you give these tools, our ten useful AI prompts are a starting point. They are written to make an assistant show its sources and admit what it does not know.
What are the limitations of this list?
- We have not hands-on tested any product. Nothing here is a performance finding.
- The list is not exhaustive. Midjourney, Canva, Gamma and ChatGPT were left out only because we could not verify their pages, not because of any judgement about them.
- Descriptions reflect vendor pages as of October 18, 2026 and may change. Products update frequently.
- We give no prices, plan limits, version numbers or compliance claims, because we could not verify them. Check each vendor directly.
- The 'limit to watch' lines are our general editorial judgement about the product type, not findings about a specific version.
This is Editorial Analysis. We have not hands-on tested any product listed, and no vendor paid for a place on this list. Descriptions are paraphrased from each vendor's own page, read on October 18, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a ranking of the best AI software?+
No. We have not published a hands-on test of any of these products, and our methodology says we do not name a performance winner without one. The list is ordered by job, not by quality. Read it as a shortlist of products worth trying.
Why are some well-known products missing?+
We list a product only when we can read its purpose on the vendor's own site. The official pages for Midjourney, Canva, Gamma and ChatGPT returned errors to our automated fetcher on October 18, 2026, so we left them out instead of describing them from memory. That is a gap in our checking, not a judgement about those products.
Why are there no prices?+
Prices and plan limits change often, and we could not verify current figures for every product. Check the vendor's pricing page on the day you buy. See our methodology for how we treat pricing claims.
How should I choose between two similar products?+
Run one real task from your own work through both, with the same inputs, and compare the results side by side. Count the time you spend fixing errors, not just the time the tool takes. The steps below show a simple way to do it.
