ChatGPT vs Claude: Which Assistant Fits Your Work?

OpenAI and Anthropic make the two most widely used AI assistants. This page compares them on what the providers document: current models, limits, voice, and data-use settings. We have not published a reproducible head-to-head performance test, so we do not claim a winner on coding or writing quality.

The current lineups

OpenAI’s API documentation lists GPT-6 Astra as its flagship for complex reasoning and coding, alongside GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Anthropic’s documentation lists four current Claude models (Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5) and recommends starting with Opus 5.5 for most workloads. The consumer apps choose models for you, and the available choices vary by plan.

Context and output limits

The two are close on paper. OpenAI lists a 1.05M-token context window and 128K maximum output for each GPT-6 model. Anthropic lists a 1M-token context window and 128K maximum output for each current Claude model. Both providers bill very long prompts differently, so check the pricing pages before building on large contexts.

Voice

Both assistants support voice conversation. Claude’s voice mode is a beta feature on every plan, available on web, desktop, and mobile, and conversations are saved as text transcripts. See each provider’s help center for current languages and plan limits.

Data use and privacy

OpenAI states that content from individual plans (Free, Plus, Pro) may be used to train its models unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls, and that Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API content is not used for training by default. Anthropic’s help center says that on consumer plans (Free, Pro, and Max) a privacy setting controls whether your chats are used to help improve Claude, and that incognito chats are not used even when that setting is on. Its article does not state the default, so check your own settings. Anthropic’s commercial terms for business plans are separate and are not covered here. If you handle confidential material, use a business plan with contractual protections.

How to choose

  • Test on your own work. Run the same ten real tasks through both: your codebase, your documents, your writing. Differences between flagship models are often smaller than differences between tasks.
  • Check where you already work. Existing integrations, team plans, and admin controls often matter more than small capability differences.
  • Match the plan to the data. Sensitive data belongs on business or enterprise plans, not consumer ones, whichever assistant you pick.

Frequently Asked Questions: ChatGPT vs Claude

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for coding?+

There is no single answer. Both providers position their flagship models for complex coding, and the difference on any task depends on your codebase and prompts. We have not published a reproducible head-to-head coding test, so we do not name a winner. Try both on your own repository.

Which has a larger context window, ChatGPT or Claude?+

They are close. As of October 18, 2026, OpenAI lists a 1.05M-token context window for its GPT-6 models and Anthropic lists 1M tokens for its current Claude models, with 128K maximum output on both. Limits change, so check each provider’s model documentation.

Can ChatGPT and Claude hold real-time voice conversations?+

Yes, both offer voice conversation. Claude’s voice mode is a beta feature available on all plans across web, desktop, and mobile. See each provider’s help center for current languages, limits, and plan availability.
